Payroll is one of the most prominent functions performed by an HR within an organization. Hence it’s imperative for an organization to understand the activities associated with payroll and the functions and duties exercised by a payroll manager.

Manufacturing sector to provide jobs, markets and improve living standards of people

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on financial inclusion and 'make in India' theme on the Independence Day and global cues will affect markets this week.

It is this manufacturing hub which will provide jobs, markets and improve the living standards of the masses. It sure sends a message which is loud and clear and one is sure that industry and the world will sit up and notice.

Markets saw the Nifty make yet another life-time high while the Sensex did not; it's a matter of time before it does. Economic indicators seem to suggest that inflation is now coming under control.
Similarly, manufacturing is undergoing a major revival and the investment climate and the sentiment have improved. The Monsoon Session of Parliament has ended and the Opposition did not allow the Insurance Bill to pass. Many more Bills would be introduced in the Winter Session
.
The government has a big unfinished agenda. The Prime Minister slated to visit the US in September and one can be sure that both countries have a host of issues to be discussed and finalised. Tata Motors, led by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), produced a brilliant set of numbers with the net profit increasing from `1,726 crore to `5,398 crore for the quarter ended June.

A big contributor to this rise was increasing sales of JLR cars in China, where the company's sales accounted for 28 per cent against 24 per cent in the yearago period. The scrip of Tata Motors gained to close at 12 per cent higher. The Syndicate Bank case clearly shows that political patronage was available to the players involved. In a mocking statement to the financial community, the management of Bhushan Steel (one of the companies involved in the Syndicate Bank scam) will seek shareholders' approval to raise $1 billion from capital markets.

The questions is who would be willing to invest in a company whose vicechairman is behind bars, the share price has plunged to `160 from `400-a fall of 60 per cent- and its promoter holding being invoked by lenders. This drama unfolding is indicative of the damage that over-leveraged companies bring unto themselves.
Foreign institutional investors (FII) maintained their bullish stance and bought equity worth `2,150 crore in the four trading days last week while domestic institutions chipped in with purchases of `550 crore. The result season is over and the most pleasant surprise is the stellar performance by oil marketing companies.

They have all reported profits for the quarter, which indicates that the under-recovery has reduced substantially. With petrol at market prices and diesel almost also at the same level, the shortfall is restricted to kerosene and LPG, which is partly subsidised by the oil producing companies. This turn in profits has a double benefit for the oil companies as they will be able to repay the loans taken to fund losses.

The week ahead will be largely driven by global news flow amid geopolitical concerns in Iraq and Ukraine, and FII activity. There is no reason to believe that the markets will stop their buoyant mood. Buy selectively.

Hiring activity improves, rises 20 per cent in July: Naukri.com

Hiring landscape in the country is showing signs of improvement as recruitment activity registered 20 per cent rise in July, led by the IT and BPO sector.

The Naukri Job Speak Index for the month under review stood at 1,649, up 20 per cent compared to July 2013. Monthly comparison also shows a growth of 5 per cent in hiring activity, compared to June 2014.

According to the leading job portal, employment scenario in the country is likely to improve further and especially in sectors like IT and Services.
"Hiring activity is slowly bouncing back. We expect the hiring landscape to improve in the coming six months especially in sectors like IT and Services which continue to create most of the jobs in the country," Info Edge (India) Ltd, which owns job portal Naukri.Com, Managing Director and CEO Hitesh Oberoi said.

An industry-wise analysis shows that sectors like IT and BPO, banking and telecom have seen significant uptrend in July over the same month a year ago. However, other sectors like oil & gas and insurance faced headwinds during July.

The report noted that demand for professionals working in IT and BPO saw maximum growth, followed by professionals in HR and Accounts & Finance and persons seeking employment in Marketing & Advertising.

"Mumbai and Kolkata have seen a growth of 17 per cent and 5 per cent respectively in July 2014 over July 2013," Naukri.com said.

Ratan Tata says Indian business leaders frown at each others' success

Industry doyen Ratan Tata rarely says anything controversial. But when he has to, he does not shy away from it. At an interaction on Tuesday after receiving the 18th MMA Amalgamations Business Leadership Award in Chennai, Tata was asked what would make the 'Made in India' brand thrive.
His response was rather surprising. "The Indian business world seems to thrive in frowning on success. We tend to pull each other down needlessly," he said.

"In other countries, businesses support each other." Tata, Chairman Emeritus at Tata Sons, did not stop there. "Getting 20 business people in a room who do not talk about their own business but take a position on India is difficult," he said.

He then asked: "How many collaborations do we have between Indian companies?"
"Our attitude of not heralding success is holding back a lot of companies," he added.
He said that the government and the industry had a joint role in ushering in growth. The government should improve infrastructure and create an environment of security and safety while industry should, through entrepreneurship, create jobs and fuel economic growth.

"Both should exist side by side and not diffuse each other. When that ceases to happen a nation fails," he said. He also pointed out that post liberalisation, nothing was holding back Indian companies from growing.
"Growth should be a byword in India," he emphasised.

"We should be bolder and think bigger." He said the quality of life of Indian citizens will improve only if there is economic growth. "We first need to create prosperity before distributing it," he said.
On his vision for India, he said that he would like to see the corporate sector working together, and a country which provides equal opportunity for all citizens and where people can find jobs based on their capabilities.

The award was presented to him for his ability to foresee economic trends, manage change, take bold initiatives, sustain values and make an outstanding contribution to business, industry and society. Previous winners of the award include J.R.D. Tata, V. Krishnamurthy, Aditya Birla, N.R. Narayana Murthy and Sunil Bharti Mittal.
